The statement sock- whether distinguished by bright blue or a bold pattern or both at the same time – has become the to-go fashion accessory for guys from Wall Street, where “Friday socks” is a thing; to boardrooms in Chicago where this unexpected flash of bright fabric shows a sense of humor, personality, and style in a work-appropriate and sophisticated manner. In Silicon Valley, where everyday is a Friday, a Bay Area buyers says that start-up guys favor socks decorated with “words like bacon and beer” and also “anything with ninjas”.
According to the US market research company NPD Group, socks have become a statement piece, and sales growth in the category has outpaced that of the broader apparel market for the past two years.
“Wearing a patterned sock in the office is a small statement saying you are more than a navy suit,” says Doug Moss, VP and General Manager of Saks Fifth Avenue, who has watched the trend grow over the past few years. “It also communicates that you care about your appearance and aren’t afraid to personalize your look.”
